Gardening Video Guides

Simple gardening guides designed to make growing organic fruit, flowers and vegetables fun. After 40 years of gardening for a living I hope to pass on some of the experience that I picked up along the way.

Dahlias 5 - Soaking Dry Tubers

Soaking dry tubers: After spending most of the past 6 or 7 months drying out the small young tubers need to be replenished by soaking in water overnight. This will wake them up from their slumbers and ready to face the coming summer.

Dahlias 6 - Setting Up Tubers

Setting up tubers: The refreshed tubers have plumped up and need to be prepared to break in to growth before planting out after the fear of frosty weather has gone. Some of the first young shoots can be used as cutting to produce more young plants.

Sweet Peas - Part 4 - Potting on

Potting up to transplant: The seeds sown last autumn have overwintered outdoors producing strong plants. These now need to be potted up individually ready to be planted out in late Spring when the weather (and more importantly the soil) has warmed up.

Lilies 8 - Potting Up Plantlets

Potting up plantlets: The young bulbils are steadily increasing in size but still need to be nursed along. By regularly potting them up the root system develops at the same time increasing the size of the bulb. Don’t be tempted to overpot the bulbs in to a large pot yet.

Lilies 9 - End Of The Line

End of the Line: After many months it is now time to prepare the young bulbs for their first steps in to the big world. The bulbs have now reached the stage where they came be expected to produce their first flowers in a year or two. Allow them to grow on feeding and repotting the bulbs when the roots begin to fill the pot. When the bulbs are 5 cms- 2 inches across they are ready to plant out in the soil.

Begonias - Cutting Large Corms

Increase your begonia stock and save yourself some money as well. Its 'Win-win' every time. Just a reminder you can't propagate the seed grown begonias the same way.

Chitting Salad Blue potatoes

Colour in the vegetable garden can be every bit as good as in the flower borders. Blue potatoes to go with yellow and purple carrots. You'll be reaching for the sunglasses every mealtime.

Lilies 7 - Young bulbils

The young bulbils are now ready for bulking up before potting on. More flowers for free. Also a reminder to start the process with any new lily bulbs you buy this spring.

Sweet Peas - Spring update

The October sown sweet peas are now nearing the end of their long winter journey. Like us they are looking forward to the warmth summer. How to get them ready for planting out in April.

Begonias - Saving Corms

After using up all of their flower power putting on their summer spectacular begonia corms need some TLC to get them through the winter. A quick health check followed with a good wash and brush-up before going off to bed for a couple of months. More on the subject follows in the next video.
