Pink Star Grass Rhodohypoxis
Rhodohypoxis are great for growing in free drawing soils. The will flower for months but need lifting and potting up to survive the winter. It isn't the cold but the wet that they can't take. Keep them in greenhouse, frame or on the ry side of a building. They can be replanted in late Spring after the danger of a hard frost has passed.

Clematis And Lilies
Clematis, I love them. I plant them in pots, grow them through climbing roses, over arches anywhere I can squeeze a plant in. Lilies I grow in pots and use them to fill gaps in the flower border (little beetles permitting). I inspect the plants every day during the summer and crush the pesky red critters under my boots.

Summer Cut Backs
Mid summer and already we need to be thinking ahead to next year. Cutting back plants as they stop flowering will help to clean up the beds and borders, but, more importantly it will allow our flowering favorites to re- group and build up their strength for next summer. It also helps to maintain the visual appearance of the garden at the same time making room for the later flowering beauties.

Iris - Dividing Congested Clumps
Mid Summer and the bearded irises have finished flowering for this year. Now is the best time to lift and divide old, congested clumps.It is a job that is best done every three years or so. beware you will end up with more plants than you could have ever imagined!

Sweet Peas 5 - Summer Care
Boy its hot!! Another Friday afternoon job Jason, I am working on 3 more to send up next week. Mike Caption: The seed was sown late last year, (see Part 1), the tips were then pinched out, (see Part 3). It is now mid summer and the flowers are ready for cutting. The plants are being grown using the single cordon method but when they reach the top of the canes 1.9 metres/ 6 feet tall the growing points will be removed and the side branches allowed to develop to produce shorter stemmed blooms in to September.

Making up a Summer Hanging Basket
Hanging baskets should be hung up outdoors until the danger of frost has gone. Late Spring is a good time for making them up. Allow three weeks for the plants to establish themselves and help them by removing any flowers during this period.
